Freakishly tall, grotesquely slobbering, Mag Mag haunts the men she falls in love with, stalking them until they die, sucking their eyeballs clean out of their sockets. But when one victim’s secret admirer, Sanae, is left heartbroken and attempts to hunt down this mysterious spirit to exact her revenge, she slowly uncovers who’s truly behind a string of grizzly murders.
This may sound a lot like textbook J-horror. That’s because, in Mag Mag, director Yuriyan Retriever doesn’t, on the surface at least, make any efforts to rethink the genre. Past wrongs, punitive wraiths, survivors-turned-detectives, Japanese folklore and a sprint against the clock before another victim is claimed are all on display here. But turning love into something not just terrifying, but farcically, degradingly lethal? It may just be the twist the canon has been waiting for.
Mag Mag doesn’t only relentlessly stalk her male targets, similar to the unseen but ever-present creature in It Follows: she gropes, licks and assaults them. But it’s not just Mag Mag. Other female characters bare their own unhinged, equally obsessive tendencies, too, reducing men to helpless, comically shrieking caricatures who feel as one-dimensional and expendable as female victims in a ’70s slasher. Suddenly, a picture that may outwardly appear superficial in terms of substance and narrative is transformed into something unexpectedly layered, richer and even more unsettling in its social (and cinematic) critique, akin to genre-flipping paradigms like Audition, Martyrs or the seminal Obsession.
Does Retriever manage to not just subvert J-horror, but challenge the gendered, formulaic tropes of all horror? Not quite. But her fresh, unapologetically absurd tone — coupled with a manic, fourth-wall-breaking performance from Sara Minami as Sanae — is why Mag Mag can largely follow the overdone arcs of J-horror, yet still, somehow, offer us something totally new yet strangely familiar. It’s brilliantly compelling and oddly predictable, all at once.
